The most common type of orthodontic treatment are braces. Braces involve the installation of brackets on the surface of the teeth and the attachment of wires and rubbers. Traditional orthodontic brackets rely on the rubber ligatures to keep the wires in place, but more advanced technology already have brackets with “metal doors” that provide continuous movement and therefore faster treatment procedures. Self-ligating brackets are available in traditional metal and ceramics, which offer a more esthetically-pleasing treatment option.
For simple corrective measures and to provide positive prevention for all kinds of occlusion and teeth misalignment and malposition issues, there are all kinds of orthodontic appliances that can be prescribed to a patient.
The following are some examples of appliances:
- Space maintainers and space regainers: When a tooth has been lost prematurely, space is lost for the permanent teeth. To be able to preserve whatever space is left, a space maintainer can be worn on the teeth to keep the space open until the permanent teeth arrive, or a space regainer can be worn to retrieve space that has been lost, previously.
- Splint: A splint is worn in preparation for orthodontic or prosthodontic rehabilitation. When a patient presents with bite and occlusion issues, he will have to wear a splint for a time, so that the TMJ can be conditioned to the new bite.
- Expansion appliance: When there is an issue with the jaw, saying the jaw is too small, it can be enlarged by wearing an expansion appliance. It is removable and it appears much like a removable retainer with a screw that can be adjusted.
