Find out if you need to see your Orthodontist
Orthodontics is the branch in dentistry which can treat variety of dental problems and completely realign teeth and jaws. For orthodontic treatments, such as to straighten teeth, orthodontists work either alone or sometimes in combination with maxillofacial and oral surgeons, pedodontists and other specialists. The most common malocclusion that need treatment are: underbite, overbite, overcrowding, crossbite.
Underbite is the protrusion of the lower jaw (mandible). In relation to the upper jaw, the lower jaw is placed in front of the upper. Developmental delays and genetics are the key factors in this type of malocclusion.
Overbite is a protrusion of the upper jaw in front of the lower jaw. The smile has a toothy appearance and in most cases, lips can’t be closed easily. The profile is more convex. Genetics and bad habits are the main causes of this type of malocclusion.
Overcrowding of the teeth refers to insufficient space in the jaws for the placement of all the teeth. Because of this, teeth can be completely misaligned. This will lead to less quality brushing and cleaning of the teeth which can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
In crossbites, one or more upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth. The reason of this might be the deviation of the mandible to the left or right. This condition can come along with mandibular prognathism.
It is important to note all the problems and malocclusions and start the treatment as soon as possible. Only then can you rest assured that you will have a healthier and more beautiful smile.
