Straight teeth, beautiful smile, and great oral health … you can have all these! Come see us at Santa Cruz Orthodontics!
When you have straight teeth, biting, chewing and articulating function will be performed more properly and effectively. Overcrowding, crossbite, underbite or overbite are all malocclusions which will lead to poor oral health and dental problems. These problems should be taken seriously and the treatment started as soon as possible to prevent any damage.
These are some of the dental disorders and problems associated with malocclusions:
– Uneven wear – while biting and chewing, some teeth will be affected and will work harder than the rest of your teeth. This is one of the most common misalignment concequences.
– Temporomandibular disorder (TMJ) – misaligned teeth will also lead to improper jaw alignment. The stress will be put on the temporomandibular joint and chewing muscles causing pain and discomfort. Headaches, teeth grinding (especially during the night), lockjaw are just some of the characteristis of this disorder.
– Periodontitis/ gum disease – misaligned and overcrowded teeth are generally harder to clean, so plaque buildup is usual in these cases. Plaque will allow bacteria to colonize and tthen the bacteria and their wasteproducts will start to irritate the gums and cause the infection. This can lead to severe bone loss and in the end teeth loss if not treated.
– Teeth injuries – injuries are less likely to occur when you have aligned teeth since they will act like a wall and will be stronger in resenting the forces.
These are just some of the benefits of having straight teeth. Remember that your oral health is important for your overall health.
