There’s much more than aesthetic problems associated with crooked and malpositioned teeth than meets the eye. They could also have a detrimental effect on your oral health. Greater susceptibility to the accumulation of plaque, increased formation of cavities, and difficulty in cleaning the mouth properly can all potentially lead to advanced tooth decay and gum disease. An optimal way to ward off these and other problems is through the application of orthodontic braces, installed by a professional dentist. Now, they may sound a bit like something out of the local home improvement store, but fear not. Braces are a particularly harmless orthodontic treatment which includes the application of arch wires, flexible ligatures, and brackets to gently manipulate and adjust the position of the patient’s teeth. These brackets, which can be made of translucent plastic (clear braces), stainless steel (which many are most familiar with), or ceramic composites, are affixed to the outward-facing surface of the teeth. The orthodontic appliances are constructed and custom-designed in such a way, making it easy for your orthodontist to fit them together with the wires and ligatures so that the teeth can be readjusted to their ultimate final and proper place. Over time, the patient will achieve the beautiful, shapely smile they’ve always wanted. Typically, braces as an orthodontic treatment requires a range of time from a few months to several years, depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the readjustment. Sometimes, it may be coupled with other procedures, as well as additional appliances as necessary to complete the treatment and produce a lasting, beneficial result. Appointments are regularly scheduled over the duration of the treatment, and during the initial visits, measurements are taken of the patient and future appointments determined so that the patient’s teeth are regularly adjusted and brought into the desired final position and alignment.
